Blog & News:
From the Capitol of Virginia
Good evening/morning friends,Yes, Richmond is the capitol of the state of Virginia. I think I forgot this fact until tonight...the lesson of states and their capitol cities from fifth grade escaped me long ago.
But alas, I'm in Richmond in the greatest hotel I've seen yet. The reason: they sell beer and frozen lasagna in the lobby. There are many reasons I will be thankful on Thursday, but beer and the beep of the microwave when my processed Italian food is done are two of my reasons tonight.
I took a cab to the venue tonight. Taking cabs with a guitar is always a good ride. The driver wants to know what kind of music you play, if you're famous, etc., etc. However, today's cab ride was especially interesting. My driver didn't care what kind of music I play, what my name is, if I'm on MTV or anything else. He wanted to know how much money I made.
Not a standard question to ask someone you don't know, but it didn't bother me too much. I explained that most musicians make their money depending on how many people come to the show. This, I continued, means that some nights are profitable and some aren't. That's just the way it goes.
The driver didn't grasp this answer. Rather, he may have grasped it; he just didn't think it was smart. When I told him that some nights I, just like many other musicians, lose money, he laughed. He also told me that I will never find a good woman to stay with me until I make a million dollars.
There's a certain level of irony in a situation that involves a cab driver telling you that you must make at least a million dollars to find happiness.
As the annual day of thanks approaches, I know I'm very lucky to get to do what I'm doing. Thanks to all of you who have spoken with me post-show, sent emails or bought records and spread them to your friends. These things may not make me a million dollars, but they are worth more than being a cash money millionaire.
Happy Turkey Day to everyone. I hope all of you are spending time with families, friends, dogs, cats and goldfish. It's a beautiful holiday season, and I hope to see many of you this weekend.
